It might not seem like the most likely industry to get India on the global map. However, Indian wine industry has achieved such success that countries like the United States of America, and the home of wine France, want a share of this pie.
Chairman of Indian Grape Wine Production Board, Jagdish Holkar shared this information recently during the first wine festival of central India. The two-day festival was jointly organized by All India Grape Processing Board of New Delhi, All India Wine Manufacturers Association, Nashik Valley Wine Manufacturers Association, Indo-Israel Krishi Vikas Sanstha and Nagpur Wine Lovers Club (NWLC).
Holkar flew into the city straight from France where he visited several internationally renowned wineries. "Food minister of France Stephane Le Foll along with food ministry of the state of California, USA has agreed to tie-up with us in exchange of techniques of wine production which would bring substantial growth in Indian wine market," he said. This collaboration would enable us to elevate the quality of Indian wine to match with international standards, he added.
To make this a possibility, there are plans to set an international standard like ISO for all types of wine-brands of the country. "This move will also make it possible for us to make every bottle follow rigorous strictures set by a single governing body," said Holkar.
Over the last two decades, several countries, including India, China, Australia and New Zealand, have joined in the fray of producing and consuming quality wines. "Wineries of these new wine producing nations have seen 25-30% growth in the business in recent years. This has also been largely because of the realization that wine is much healthier than alcoholic drinks," he said.
An added advantage for wines produced in India in the western world is the soil quality, and therefore the quality of the produce of the Indian fields, said Holkar. "This gives a big boost to the nation's agro-economy, too. It is not just limited to grapes. Several experiments of wine production from fruits, including kiwi and apples from Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh respectively are being used to make wine," he added. @source – TOI
